Description
New adventures in Bookbinding
with Magalie Briand from Brilliant Magpie Bookbinding
Saturday 20th July 2024
10am – 4pm Attic Studio
Beginners welcome – maximum 8 students
Create your own unique and colourful pocket-size notebooks.
Please come and join Magalie from Brilliant Magpie Bookbinding to make 3 adorable pocket-size notebooks; functional, and beautifully crafted, designed for note taking on the go.
We will be making 3 different notebooks using 3 different bookbinding and sewing techniques. We will first spend time playing with Gelli printing* on a big piece of smooth paper and we will use this decorated paper to create each of our covers.
*Gelli printing is a fun and simple way to create textures and shape on paper.
Our notebooks will be:
1. Pamphlet stitch with a twist. We will be taking this simple sewing to the next level.
2. Concertina hard covered book. We will be learning to cover boards and cutting perfect corners. I will introduce you to a different way to build a concertina book.
3. A soft notebook with a sewing stitch I designed, inspired by Coptic stitch.
We will discuss possible fasteners and if time permits, design some for our books. You will leave with 3 unique notebooks, full of colours to carry together or separately as the mood takes you.
Throughout the day, I will share my knowledge and experience so you will have a bucket full of tricks and tips to take back home.
You will leave with your own unique notebooks to doodle or write in to keep for yourself or you may choose to give it as a special present! (I have no doubt you will be wanting to make many more and I will have small kits available for sale for any keen artist who gets the bug!!).
This workshop is suitable for beginners or anyone more advanced who wants to experience a different vision.

Paint
I will be bringing my own acrylics and would like £5 cash on the day for people to use them. If you would rather bring your own or buy from Pegasus, please see below.
You can buy Amsterdam acrylic paints: https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/painting-acrylic-paints-amsterdam-standard.irc
or System 3 Daler Rowley https://www.pegasusart.co.uk/painting-acrylic-paints-daler-rowney.irc
I have tested both and Amsterdam are extremely nice to use but more expensive. System 3 are also fine but not as pigmented. I use another range which is pigmented and lovely to use on a Gelli plate. Depending on your budget, I would suggest 2 colours and if possible 3. Please avoid any metallic, fluorescent, thick Heavy body, or open Golden acrylics as they aren’t as suitable for this workshop.
Optional Material List
All items below are optional. Please do not buy anything that is optional as I will bring many to share but if you do happen to have anything on the list below, please bring them!!
- An apron, if no apron… Don’t wear your Sunday best!
- A small cotton rag, an old tea towel is fine. This is to clean any surplus glue, wipe your hands if you are a messy worker like me ;-)
- I will be bringing Gelli plates for everyone, but if you do have one please bring it!
- A brayer/ roller (I have a few but anyone with one or more, please bring them ;-) I prefer soft but hard rollers are fine as well.
- Stencils and any stamps you may have to decorate your covers.
- Please don’t forget to bring your reading glasses with you.
- A packed lunch – there is no café at Griffin Mill. We will supply tea and coffee but please bring your own water and snacks.
Any existing bookbinder can bring their awls and cutting mats and bone folders. I will be bringing the most gorgeous linen threads to sew our books with as well as items for book closures.
Let’s have loads of fun!! And I am looking forward to seeing you there!

About Magalie
“I fell in love with bookbinding many years ago. I have always been creative and was looking at ways to display my watercolour paintings… making my own handmade book felt like an organic solution. After much trial and error, I took the wonderful journey of learning traditional bookbinding with some of the best bookbinders in the UK. This gives me a wonderful base to work from and I have developed my own identity - splashing a modern twist into any handmade book I make. I love creating my own cover - it might be from Gelli printing or watercolour, cyanotype and even using my own creative process “Ecolite”. Find me on Instagram @brilliantmagpiebookbinding
All students get an extra 5% off art materials in the shop on the day.
